$30,000 in Grants Available to Help Protect Tampa Bay’s Drinking Water Sources

CLEARWATER, Fla. (August 10, 2020) – Community groups, non-profit organizations, schools and service organizations can receive a share of $30,000 for protecting the Tampa Bay area’s drinking water sources. The program is sponsored by Tampa Bay Water, the region’s drinking water provider, to help keep drinking water safe by preventing pollution, cleaning waterways and protecting watersheds.

“Protecting drinking water starts at the source,” said Michelle Stom, Tampa Bay Water’s chief communications officer. “Partnering with the community on this effort helps to ensure that the region has clean, safe water supplies for generations to come.”

The grants range between $2,000 and $10,000 per organization, for a total of $30,000 available annually for the program. To qualify for a grant, applicants must apply for an event or project related to protecting drinking water sources that include the Hillsborough River, Alafia River, Tampa Bypass Canal, and several groundwater wellfields in the Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas county service area.

Grant projects are ideal opportunities for scouts to earn merit badges, students to fulfill volunteer hour requirements, and service clubs and organizations to get involved in supporting public health and safety. The projects are also great for educators looking to combine STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts and lessons with hands-on experience to supplement classroom learning.

Here's how to apply:

  • Download an application at tampabaywater.org/grant
  • Provide a plan for events or projects that could include river cleanups, litter prevention projects, public education campaigns and outreach events in Tampa Bay Water’s service area.
  • Submit applications by Nov. 15, 2020, at 5 p.m.

All applications will be reviewed and screened against the program’s selection criteria. Organizations receiving a grant will be notified in December 2020 and funds will be made available in 2021.
