Water Smarter: Know you watering days

Do Your Part and Be Water Smart!

Hillsborough County is growing and so is the need for more water. Tampa Bay Water and Hillsborough County are working on projects to deliver more water to the area, but we need your help to Water Smarter!

Did you know, during drier months, watering your landscape can account for up to 50% of the entire household’s water use?

Year-round watering restrictions are in effect to limit outdoor water use to only what is needed. So, know your watering day (it’s only one!) to avoid citations by Hillsborough County Code Enforcement. Violations may result in citations starting at $100.

Visit the Hillsborough County watering days page to find out when you can water!

Ways to Water Smarter Outdoors

Limiting watering to only your allowed day is key, but here is more water knowledge and some other ways to save water… and money. Taking these steps help you do your part to be Water Smart!

  • During winter months, you only need to water once every 14 days. Shrubs only need to be watered once a month this time of year.
  • When it’s raining or rain is in the forecast, skip a week of watering and let Mother Nature water your lawn for free.
  • Use a hose nozzle when hand watering.
  • Wait to re-sod or put in new plants until the summer rainy season returns. Better yet, install a Florida-friendly landscape instead.
  • Install a smart irrigation controller. Bonus tip: you might qualify for a free controller through the Tampa Bay Water Wise program.
  • Install a shallow well for irrigation. This takes you off the County utility system completely for watering your landscape. You might qualify for a $1,000 rebate through the Tampa Bay Water Wise program.
  • Inspect your irrigation system regularly for broken and blocked sprinkler heads and to make sure you’re not watering the sidewalk.
  • The Hillsborough County UF/IFAS Extension Office offers free irrigation audits. Visit https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/ to take advantage of this service.

It’s important to make sure your irrigation timers are set correctly. Check out this video to see how to take control of your irrigation, no matter your skill level!
