Water Quality Vigilance

From sinkholes to sewage spills, recent news stories have prompted questions from residents about the quality of their drinking water. Tampa Bay Water wants to assure residents that the drinking water we provide to their utilities continues to be safe and high-quality. Only water that meets our stringent standards is delivered to the governments we serve.

We carefully monitor the environment around the public’s drinking water facilities and, when necessary, take preventive measures. To date, neither the Mosaic sinkhole, red tide nor recent sewage spills have affected Tampa Bay Water facilities.

We are working closely with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and The Mosaic Company to track the possible migration of contamination from the sinkhole that opened on Mosaic’s property. Our nearest wellfield is about 5 miles from the sinkhole. Monitoring wells in between our wellfield and Mosaic’s property have shown no changes in water quality. However, as a safety precaution, we have turned off the two eastern-most wells.

Red tide and sewage spills in the Bay have also been monitored, but pose no threat to our desalination plant.

Providing safe drinking water is a priority for Tampa Bay Water. We remain vigilant, conducting thousands of water quality tests each year to assure quality and safety.
