Clearwater, Fla. (June 17, 2013) – By a vote of 8-0, Tampa Bay Water’s board of directors hired Matthew W. Jordan as Tampa Bay Water’s new general manager. The selection makes Mr. Jordan Tampa Bay Water’s third General Manager since the agency was created in 1998. Mr. Jordan will start work on July 8, 2013 and will be paid $180,000 annually.

Mr. Jordan comes to Tampa Bay Water from the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he served as its first chief executive officer.  CFPUA was formed in 2008 to deliver water and wastewater services previously provided by the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County. Mr. Jordan led the consolidation process, including the formation of the new Authority’s ordinances, policies and operational programs. He was also instrumental in creating and implementing efforts that dramatically improved the aging water and wastewater systems CFPUA inherited.

Before joining the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority, Mr. Jordan served as the director of public works and utilities for the City of Gastonia, NC since 2001. Prior to serving as director, Mr. Jordan served in a variety of progressively responsible positions in Public Works and Utilities since 1984.

Mr. Jordan is a past president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Public Water Association and was awarded the Chapter’s Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Jordan served on the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Group for Bill Ross, Secretary of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources; served as Board President of NC One-Call; participated in the Catawba-Wateree Water Supply group for the Duke Power re-licensing of the hydroelectric project for the Catawba-Wateree watershed.  Presently he serves on the UNC-Wilmington Master of Public Administration Advisory Board and is a guest speaker at various professional organizations.

Mr. Jordan obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering technology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC. He is a registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina.

Tampa Bay Water’s board of directors began the search to fill the position after its former general manager, Gerald J. Seeber, informed the board in February of his intentions to leave the agency.

More than 180 applications were received. Of those, 52 met the minimum qualification criteria and were reviewed by a screening committee, which included the agency’s three officers, the outgoing general manager, representatives from each member government, and the chairman of the board.

Tampa Bay Water’s board interviewed the top five candidates on April 29, 2013 before beginning negotiations with Mr. Jordan. The agency’s chairman and general counsel completed contract negotiations with Mr. Jordan on May 20, 2013, setting the stage for today’s vote.

The agency’s board of directors also approved its 2014 budget, which includes a zero percent increase over the previous year. This marks the second consecutive budget with no rate increase.
