Tampa Suspended Ion Exchange Pilot May Help Water Quality Study

Tampa Bay Water staff toured the City of Tampa’s Suspended Ion Exchange (SIX) Pilot Plant at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Plant on April 5 to learn about a new technology that can remove total organic carbon from the city’s source water, the Hillsborough River.

Tampa Bay Water is also studying the removal of total organic carbon as a means of improving water quality by reducing disinfection byproduct formation and improving disinfection stability. The technology in Tampa’s SIX pilot plant will also be considered as part of the Tampa Bay Water Regional Water Quality study. Once Tampa staff complete their pilot this summer, they’ve offered to work with Tampa Bay Water to use the SIX pilot unit.

Results of the city’s pilot study are very promising not only for total organic carbon removal but also for the significant potential to reduce chemical usage in other surface water treatment processes at the Tippin Plant.
