c.w. bill young regional reservoir

The 15.5-billion gallon, above-ground, off-stream reservoir is an integral part of Tampa Bay Water’s Enhanced Surface Water System. When surplus river water is available in the Tampa Bypass Canal, Alafia and Hillsborough rivers, it is sent to the reservoir for storage.  Then, during dry times, water from the reservoir is sent to the Tampa Bay Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant and to our customers.

The reservoir was constructed with an earthen embankment that is 300-feet wide at its base.  A geomembrane and soil-bentonite (clay) cutoff wall keep the water on the inside of the reservoir.

Lining the interior of the reservoir is the erosion control layer, which includes a soil wedge that sits on top of and protects the geomembrane.  Additionally, flat-plate soil cement is applied to protect the soil wedge.

The reservoir is located on 5,200 acres purchased by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Tampa Bay Water. The site is located in southeastern Hillsborough County.
