Summary of Landscape and Irrigation Ordinance Requirements for
City of Tampa (Updated 05/13/2003):

The following information has been compiled as a courtesy to landscape and irrigation contractors and residents only; please verify all information prior to applying for licensing and permits.

What are the Specific Design Elements Required for Landscape and Irrigation systems?

  • Sprinkler spacing shall not exceed 55% of the sprinkler’s diameter of coverage.

  • Sprays and rotors shall not be combined on the same control valve circuit.

  • Within each irrigation zone, sprays and rotors shall have matching application rates.

  • Irrigation systems shall be designed to avoid overspray or runoff.

  • Narrow areas (4’ or less) shall not be irrigated unless micro-irrigation is utilized.

  • Turf areas shall be on a separate irrigation zone than other landscape zones.

  • Irrigation equipment shall include an automatic irrigation controller with battery backup.

  • Automatic Controller shall be equipped with a rain sensor device.
  • New Development requires a 50/50 split between turf and landscape (areas of low volume irrigation (low volume irrigation is equal to or less than 30 gal/hour and cannot be used on turf)

What Work Requires a Permit?

  • New and existing residential/commercial development and additions require permits. Submittal documents shall include a separate site plan showing irrigation zone information and a signed and completed irrigation affidavit. Final site inspection for Certificate of Occupancy will include an irrigation system inspection.

What are the Required Documents to Obtain the Permit?

  • 3 copies of both 1st and 2nd page of Affidavit of Compliance

  • 3 sets of site plans and/or survey
    • Need to indicate on site plans and/or survey what is going to be irrigated, micro-irrigated, and non-irrigated.

    • Everything must be posted on job-site
