Effective use of water has become a necessity in light of decreasing water sources and increasing population and agricultural demand. An increase in the number of home irrigation systems installed has created a demand for trained irrigation technicians, and the irrigation industry has become highly sophisticated in both engineering and product use. Courses of study are available to teach basic irrigation principles and methods of evaluating the efficiency and operating condition of irrigation systems.
The U.S. EPA WaterSense program has a professional certification program to become a WaterSense partner as an irrigation professional. By becoming a WaterSense partner, water conscious customers can identify you as a
professional service provider that encourages the use of water-efficient practices.

To tackle the issue of efficient water management, Irrigation Evaluators Workshops are offered by the Florida Irrigation Society. Developed by the USDA Natural Resources and Conservation Service and the Florida Irrigation Society, these classroom and hands-on sessions teach how to perform water audit testing to determine uniform distribution and irrigation system efficiency. This is an excellent program to learn how to evaluate the efficiency and operating condition of irrigation systems.
