Water-efficient aerators on faucets help stop money from going down the drain. A traditional faucet with an aerator, one manufactured before 1994, can use 25 gallons per day. Water-efficient faucets with aerators, those manufactured during or after 1994, can reduce water use by 25 percent. You can retrofit your traditional faucet with water-efficient aerators that can be purchased at your local hardware store. Costs range from $3 to $7 each.
New dishwashers use just four to nine gallons per load. To achieve maximum efficiency, use the shortest cycle possible to get the job done, and always wait until you have a full load to run your dishwasher. If you are buying a new washer and want to insure it's using water efficiently, make sure its an Energy Star appliance and uses less than 6.5 gallons per load.
